Chemistry is a branch of science that deals with the study of matter: its structure, composition, properties, and the changes it undergoes. It involves the study of material substances that occur on earth and in the universe. Other branches of science are biology and physics.

What is Matter?

Things that are regarded as matter surround us. Matter anythingthat has mass and occupies space. The houses we live in, he clothes we wear, the food we eat the air we breathe, the water we drink; stonc, wood, plants, animals- inciuding the person reading this book are examples of matter.

What are chemicals?

All forms of matter - whether natural or artificial (man-made) are chemical substances.

Why we study chemistry?

We study chemistry in order to understand the way matter behaves and reacts under different conditions, and to device ways in which it can be used to improve our life, Chemistry concerns with the utilization of natural substances and the creation of artificial ones.

A Study of chemistry enables those who study it to acquire certain scientific skills such as handling of laboratory apparatus, performing experiments with ease, and thinking scientifically. The application of knowledge and skills gathered through the study of science is called technology. Scientists in the field of chemistry are called chemists.

Chemistry is a relevant and developing science, which is making essential contributions towards human life, society, industry and civilization. Its contents can be divided into four broad categories:
