2023: Those Who Burn Our Offices are Not Enough to Stop Us From Holding Elections - INEC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said that the attacks on the offices of the commission in some parts of the country will not prevent it from holding the 2023 general election.

Yakubu disclosed this on Tuesday in Abeokuta during an inspection tour of the INEC office by some miscreants who attacked and set it on fire. 

On the 10th of November, gunmen burnt down the office of the commission in Iyana, Abeokuta South Local Government Area, destroying over 65,000 permanent voter cards that were not received by their owners.

The Chairman of INEC said that the commission was not happy with the activities of the arsonists, saying that there have been attacks in five places across the country in the last four months.
He said that the agency has already started trying to replace the items that were burnt by the fire.

The reason for our visit to this office is to assess the extent of the damage and to meet with our workers especially where they have returned to Oke-Ilewo to give them confidence And to assure the people of Abeokuta South that despite this tragedy, local government elections will be held in 2023.
